South Florida Bulls vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

The South Florida Bulls take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights as they kick off Sunday’s college hoops action.  The Bulls are -3.5 point favorites over the Scarlet Knights with an over/under point total set at 118.

The South Florida Bulls have lost three of their last four games including their Big East opener and Stan Heath’s team looks to even their conference record here. USF has played the 73rd ranked schedule in the nation and will get tougher but they have been very competitive in most of their losses. Augustus Gilchrist is averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds, Toarlyn Fitzpatrick is averaging 9.6 points and 7.0 rebounds, Victor Rudd is averaging 9.1 points and 3.6 rebounds, and Ron Anderson Jr. is averaging 8.4 points and 5.6 rebounds. As a team South Florida is averaging 60.9 points and they are shooting 43 percent while their opponents score 57.8 points and shoot 40.1 percent. The Bulls have lost their last two games by a combined five points.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are coming off of a huge win as Mike Rice’s team knocked off 10th ranked Florida on Thursday. RU has won four in a row and this is their Big East opener. Eli Carter is averaging 12.8 points, Gilvydas Biruta is averaging 10.9 points and 6.0 rebounds, Myles Mack is averaging 10.8 points and Dane Miller is averaging 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds. As a team Rutgers is averaging 70.0 points and they are shooting 44.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 63 points and their opponents shoot 39.4 percent. The question is was Rutgers big win on Thursday a blip on the radar or is it the confidence booster this team needs to be competitive every week.

South Florida is 19-9-1against the spread in their last 29 neutral site games, and 12-5 against the spread following a loss. Rutgers is 3-0-1 against the spread in their last four against the Big East, 4-9-1 against the spread in their last 14 neutral site games, and 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games overall. The favorite has covered in seven of the last eight meetings of these two.

In most cases when a team pulls a big upset at home when they play their next game on the road they are usually way over valued, the same is the case here for Rutgers.
