Purdue Boilermakers vs. Michigan Wolverines

The Purdue Boilermakers and the Michigan Wolverines meet up for a Big Ten hoops battle in West Lafayette.  The Boilermakers are -4.5 point favorites over the Wolverines with an over/under point total set at 129.

The Purdue Boilermakers are still looking for their identity this season as Matt Painter’s team sits tied for fifth place in the Big Ten. Purdue is 4-3 in conference play, 10-1 at home, and 1-1 in games against teams ranked in the top 25. Robbie Hummel is averaging 15.3 points and 6.2 rebounds, Lewis Jackson is averaging 10.0 points, and Ryne Smith is averaging 9.9 points. As a team Purdue is averaging 71.8 points and they are shooting 43.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 63 points and their opponents are shooting 41.9 percent. A win over a ranked opponent wouldn’t do anything but help Purdue’s resume in March.

Despite losing two of their last three games the Michigan Wolverines are part of the three way tie for first place in the Big Ten. John Beilein’s team is 0-4 on the road, 5-2 in the Big Ten, and Michigan is 6-4 against teams with a RPI better than 100. Tim Hardaway Jr. is averaging 15.1 points, Trey Burke is averaging 14.6 points and 4.9 assists, and Zack Novak is averaging 9.7 points. As a team Michigan is averaging 68.5 points and they are shooting 46 percent while defensively they are allowing 60.9 points and their opponents are shooting 41.9 percent. Michigan appears to still be improving but they still need that elusive road win.

Purdue is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall, 2-8 against the spread in their last 10 Big Ten games, and 7-2 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover. Michigan is 16-5 against the spread in their last 21 Big Ten games, 23-8-1 against the spread in their last 32 games overall, and 10-3-1 against the spread in their last 14 road games. Michigan is 4-9 against the spread in the last 13 meetings of these two.

The total is set at 129 and with these teams averaging closer to a combined 140 the over shouldn’t be much of an issue.
