Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Villanova Wildcats
The Marquette Golden Eagles and the Villanova Wildcats meet in a New Year’s Day Big East matchup. The Golden Eagles are -10.5 point favorites over the Wildcats with an over/under point total set at 141.
The Marquette Golden Eagles open their Big East schedule in this one as Buzz Williams’ team looks to bounce back from a one sided loss to Vandy on Thursday. The Golden Eagles have now lost two of their last three, both games in which they were favored in and they will need to regain their focus as four of their next six games are against ranked teams. Darius Johnson-Odom is averaging 17.4 points, Jae Crowder is averaging 17.2 points and 7.5 rebounds, Todd Mayo is averaging 9.7 points, and Vander Blue is averaging 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds. As a team Marquette is averaging 78.5 points and they are shooting 46.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 62.5 points and their opponents shoot 38.1 percent. Marquette is clearly a talented team with a lineup that can beat anyone but they will need to avoid the let downs to be successful.
After years among the college basketball elite Jay Wright’s Villanova Wildcats seem to be taking a step backwards and rebuilding. Nova lost some key components of their recent year’s teams and while they still have plenty of talent, it takes more than that to be successful in the Big East. Maalik Wayns is averaging 17.6 points and 5.3 assists, Mouphtaou Yarou averages 12.9 points and 8.5 rebounds, and Dominic Cheek is averaging 12.2 points and 4.8 rebounds. As a team Villanova is averaging 72.5 points and they are shooting just 42.4 percent while defensively the allow 67.3 points and their opponents shoot 41.1 percent. Villanova’s offense calls for them to shoot better than they are to be successful and until they start to shoot better they are going to struggle to get wins.
Marquette is 4-1 against the spread following a double digit home loss, 0-5-1 against the spread in their last six home games, and 3-1-1 against the spread following a loss. Villanova is 3-13 against the spread in their last 16 against the Big East, 1-10 against the spread in their last 11 road games, and 1-7 against the spread in their last eight road games against a team with a winning home record. The underdog has covered in four of the last five meetings of these two.
Marquette will be focused and zoned in here but I don’t like laying this kind of number as the road team rules in this series and I see the road team covering again.
