LSU Tigers vs. Auburn Tigers

Two teams that are part of a four way tie for seventh place in the SEC collide on Tuesday as the LSU Tigers host the Auburn Tigers.  Auburn is -10.5 point favorites over LSU with an over/under point total se at 121.

The LSU Tigers appear to be a much better team than they were a year ago but Trent Johnson’s team has lost three of their last four games with the last two of those being road conference games. LSU is 6-2 at home this season, 1-2 in the SEC, and has played the 73rd ranked schedule in the nation which will get even more difficult in the coming weeks. Justin Hamilton is averaging 13.4 points and 7.5 rebounds, Andre Stringer is averaging 11.4 points, and Anthony Hickey is averaging 9.1 points. As a team LSU is averaging 67.3 points and they are shooting 40.2 percent while defensively they are allowing 60.9 points and their opponents are shooting 39.5 percent. With road games at Mississippi State and Florida up next followed by a return home to play Kentucky, LSU is looking at as tough of an upcoming schedule as any team in the nation.

The Auburn Tigers got their first SEC win of the season last time out as Tony Barbee’s team knocked off Ole Miss but this year has once again been a struggle for them. Auburn is 1-3 on the road, 1-2 in SEC games, and have played just the 217th ranked schedule in the country. Frankie Sullivan is averaging 11.6 points and 4.4 rebounds, Kenny Gabriel is averaging 11.5 points and 7.9 rebounds, and Chris Denson is averaging 11.1 points. As a team Auburn is averaging 65.6 points and they are shooting 43.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 65 points and their opponents are shooting 40.6 percent. With an 0-5 record against teams with an RPI better than 50 and a schedule loaded with that caliber of team, it could be a long year for the Tigers.

LSU is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games following a game which they didn’t cover, 2-5 against the spread in their last seven SEC games, and 9-3 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Auburn is 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games overall, 1-4 against the spread in their last five road games, and 1-4 against the spread following a win. The road team has covered in six of the last eight in this series.

LSU is laying a big number here and while generally I’m not a big fan of the big number with a team who hasn’t shown they can be consistent I see it as being pretty safe here.
