Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines
The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Michigan Wolverines battle it out in a Big Ten college hoops contest on Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines are -2.5 pint favorites over the Hawkeyes with an over/under point total set at 138.
The Iowa Hawkeyes got off to a strong start to their Big Ten schedule but back to back games against ranked teams have been their undoing as Fran McCaffrey’s team has dropped their last two games in a row. This will be Iowa’s third game in a row against a ranked opponent and for the season they are 0-3 against ranked teams and 8-4 at home this year. Matt Gatens is averaging 13.1 points and 4.3 rebounds, Roy Devyn Marble is averaging 10.7 points, and Melsahan Basabe is averaging 9.1 points and 5.7 rebounds. As a team Iowa is averaging 74.2 points and they are shooting 44.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 71.7 points and their opponents shoot 45.8 percent. Iowa has already shown the ability to pull the upset they just haven’t shown the ability to play consistently well.
The Michigan Wolverines are a team on the rise and John Beilein’s team seems to get better with each game. Michigan came from well back against Northwestern in their last game to force overtime and walk away with a two point win but once again that will be an experience they can build upon and use to their advantage later. Tim Hardaway Jr. is averaging 16.1 points, Trey Burke is averaging 14.1 points and 5.1 assists, Evan Smotrycz is averaging 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, and Zack Novak is averaging 9.0 points. As a team Michigan is averaging 69.9 points and they are shooting 46.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 59.8 points while their opponents are shooting 40.9 percent. Michigan looks like they are going to be a factor this season and at the pace they are going they should be peaking at the right time when the NCAA Tournament rolls around.
Iowa is 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven Big Ten games, and 5-2 against the spread against a team with a winning record. Michigan is 10-2 against the spread in their last 12 road games, 15-3 against the spread in their last 18 Big Ten games, and 9-2 against the spread in their last 11 road games against a team with a winning home record. The home team has covered in six of the last eight meetings of these two.
Michigan is a slight favorite on the road and while Iowa has been tough at home Michigan has learned how to win and with this number they cover as well.
