DePaul Blue Demons vs. Georgetown Hoyas

The DePaul Blue Demons return home from three road losses to host the Georgetown Hoyas in Big East college hoops action on Tuesday.  The Hoyas are -8 point favorites over the Blue Demons with an over/under point total set at 146.5.

The DePaul Blue Demons are a better team than they have been the past several years but Oliver Purnell has plenty of work to do with his team in order to get them more competitive on a regular basis. DePaul is 6-3 at home this season, 1-4 in Big East play, and 0-3 against teams ranked in the top 25 but scoring points isn’t a problem the Blue Demons are having, it’s stopping their opponents from scoring more. Cleveland Melvin is averaging 18 points and 6.2 rebounds, Brandon Young is averaging 16.9 points and 4.7 assists, and Jeremiah Kelly is averaging 9.6 points. As a team DePaul is averaging 75.8 points and they are shooting 43.8 percent and their opposition averages 74.6 points and shoots 47.7 percent but they are 236th in offensive rebounding and 334th in defensive rebounding. DePaul is getting better but they won’t beat the better teams until they can stop them from scoring or at least slow them down.

The Georgetown Hoyas are one of the better teams in the country and they ended their two game losing streak on Sunday winning at St. John’s by 20. John Thompson III’s Hoyas are 4-1 on the road and 4-2 in Big East play, and a strong 5-2 against teams with an RPI better than 50. Jason Clark is averaging 15.4 points and 4.2 rebounds, Hollis Thompson is averaging 14.6 points and 5.5 rebounds, Henry Sims is averaging 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds, and Otto Porter is averaging 8.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. As a team Georgetown is averaging 72.6 points and they are shooting 47.8 percent while defensively they are allowing just 59 points and their opponents shoot 39.1 percent. Georgetown has a team that can contend for the Big East title as every game for every team is going to be a battle and they are one of the few teams in the conference whose schedule actually gets easier going forward.

DePaul is 3-7-1 against the spread following a loss, 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall, and 1-8-1 against the spread in their last 10 Big East games. Georgetown is 5-1 against the spread in their last six road games, 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall, and 2-10 against the spread in their last 12 Big East games. The road team has covered four in a row in this series.

DePaul has been marshmallow soft of late and the Hoyas are just the team to torch them.
