Baylor Bears vs. Texas A&M Aggies
The Baylor Bears and the Texas A&M Aggies play their first games of the New Year and the first games of their Big 12 schedules as they meet in Waco. The Bears are -12 favorites over the Aggies with an over/under point total set at 124.
The Baylor Bears are off to a blistering start and while they started the season with a light schedule Scott Drew’s team has been taking on all comers of late and has been beating them all. While Baylor’s schedule will continue to get tougher they have played the 84th ranked schedule with two wins over teams ranked in the top 25 and six wins over tams with an RPI better than 100. Quincy Acy is averaging 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, Perry Jones III is averaging 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds, Quincy Miller is averaging 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds, and Pierre Jackson is averaging 12.2 points. As a team Baylor is averaging 77.6 points, 39.4 offensive rebounds, and they are shooting 49 percent while defensively they are allowing 58.8 points and their opponents are shooting just 36.8 percent from the floor. Of course Baylor has many huge tests ahead but at this point they have all of the looks of a contender.
The Texas A&M Aggies have been ranked in the top 25 for most of the season but back to back losses to Florida and Rice knocked Billy Kennedy’s team from the rankings. Texas A&M has played one of the softest schedules in the nation and while they should be tough enough to compete their 0-2 record against the top 25 doesn’t bode well. Khris Middleton is averaging 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds, Elston Turner is averaging 12.8 points, Ray Turner is averaging 12 points and 6.4 assists, and David Loubeau is averaging 11.6 points and 4.9 rebounds. As a team Texas A&M is averaging 64.8 points and they are shooting 46.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 55.8 points and their opponents are shooting just 35.7 percent. Much of the Aggies stats have come against the 341st ranked schedule in the nation and while they seem to have a roster of double digit scorers it seems they have few scoring options when they need them.
Baylor is 4-10 against the spread in their last 14 home games, 1-5 against the spread against the Big 12, and 0-4 against the spread in their last four home games against a team with a losing road record. Texas A&M is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games against the Big 12, 0-4 against the spread in their last four road games, and 0-5 against the spread in their last five games overall. The underdog is 13-3 against the spread in the last 16 meetings of these two.
Baylor is clearly an elite team and when the Aggies faced an elite Florida team it was over in the first five minutes. This is a ton of points and while A&M have been uninspiring, for a free pick I’ll take the points as they are built for playing against Big 12 teams so they should match up against them.
