Arkansas St. Red Wolves vs. Florida Atlantic Owls
The Florida Atlantic Owls meet the Arkansas State Red Wolves at the Convocation Center in Sun Belt action. The Owls look to bounce back from a 40-38 loss to Arkansas-Little Rock while the Red Wolves knocked off North Texas 75-72. The Red Wolves and Owls are a pickem with the over/under total set at 117.
Florida Atlantic is a team going nowhere unless they can make a run in the Sun Belt even though the Owls can look far better than their record. The problem is they look as bad as their record more often which is why this season has been a struggle. FAU has dropped six of seven and the loss to Arkansas Little Rock was as frustrating as they come with the Trojans scoring the last eight points of the game. Florida Atlantic averages 65 points and allows 67 so the numbers have worked against them the entire season and their 32.6% shooting didn’t help the situation versus UALR who were ripe for the picking with only 29.5% accuracy. The small difference in shooting might have been enough were it not for 19 turnovers and a 13-6 deficit at the line. Kore White was the big producer with 17 points and seven rebounds but five players did not score for the Owls.
Arkansas State doesn’t have a good overall record but what thyey have goiung for them is a 2-1 conference mark with a chance to go 3-1 which puts the Red Wolves near the top of the Sun Belt. ASU is one of the more controlled attacks in the conference at under 64 points which generally only has a chance if their defense can keep the score in the mid 60′s. Neither unit looked like themselves against North Texas with the Red Wolves hitting shots at an uncharacteristic 55% and needing it with the Mean Green making 48.3% of their attempts including 9 of 21 from three. Better shooting and a 17-7 edge at the line was the difference. Marcus Hooten was the big gun with 24 points with Malcoln Kirkland adding 15 points while Trey Finn contributed 15 points and seven pulls.
Florida Atlantic scores a bit more and Arkansas State gives up a bit less but not by much. Anytime you back the Owls it’s always more of a surprise when they cover and I hope to be surprised here.
