Western Carolina Catamounts vs. Purdue Boilermakers
The Purdue Boilermakers and the Western Carolina Catamounts meet in West Lafayette for a Wednesday college hoops matchup. The Boilermakers are -25 point favorites over the Catamounts.
The Purdue Boilermakers are looking to rebound from their second loss of the season at Matt Painter’s team looks to see exactly where they are as a team this year. While Purdue has had no troubles with the teams they are supposed to beat they are 0-2 this year when called upon to step it up against the top 25. Robbie Hummel leads Purdue averaging 18.8 points and 5.1 rebounds, Ryne Smith is averaging 11.3 points, Lewis Jackson is averaging 10.8 points and 4.3 assists, and Kelsey Barlow is averaging 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds. As a team Purdue is averaging 76.9 points and they are shooting 45.3 percent while defensively they are allowing 61.8 points and their opponents shoot 40.5 percent. While Purdue doesn’t face top flight competition here they will need to stockpile wins if they hope to be dancing this March.
The Western Carolina Catamounts have won their last three games in a row but Larry Hunter’s team has played the 307th ranked schedule in the nation. The Catamounts haven’t beaten a team with a RPI better than 200 and are 2-3 thus far on the road. Harouna Mutombo is averaging 14.8 points and 5.1 rebounds, Brandon Boggs is averaging 13 points and 4.7 rebounds, Trey Sumler is averaging 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists, and Keaton Cole is averaging 9.7 points. As a team WCU is averaging 67.2 points and they are shooting 41.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 69.1 points and their opponents shoot 46.5 percent from the floor. This is a big test for Western Carolina and to just be competitive here would be a victory of sorts.
Purdue is 4-1 against the spread following a loss, 11-4 against the spread in their last 15 home games, and 15-7 against the spread in their last 22 games as a favorite. Western Carolina is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games against the Big Ten, 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five road games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games.
Purdue will win this easily and should cover the 25-point spread. I will make a small play on them.
