Washington Huskies vs. Oregon St. Beavers

The Washington Huskies and the Oregon State Beavers face off as they both begin their Pac-12 schedules on Thursday.  The Huskies are -6 point favorites over the Beavers with an over/under point total set at 158.

It’s been a slow start to the season for Lorenzo Romar’s Washington Huskies and while some it has to do with tough scheduling some of it has to do with lost talent from last year’s team and the rebuilding process. UW has taken on the likes of Duke and Marquette but they have had no success against them going 0-2 against teams ranked in the top 25 and with no wins over a team with an RPI better than 100. Tony Wroten is averaging 16 points and 4.5 rebounds, Terrance Ross is averaging 15.1 points and 6.5 rebounds, and C.J. Wilcox is averaging 14.5 points. As a team Washington is averaging 79.7 points, 41 offensive rebounds, and they are shooting 46.5 percent while defensively they are allowing 74 points and their opponents shoot 41.7 percent. The Huskies have the firepower to score with anyone but on defensively they will need to improve to be successful in Pac-12 play.

The Oregon State Beavers are off to an impressive 10-2 start to the season but Craig Robinson’s team has played the 321st ranked schedule in the nation thus far and have yet to be really tested. The Beavers come in as winners of four in a row but they have only played one team with an RPI better than 50. Jared Cunningham is averaging 16.8 points, Devon Collier is averaging 14.1 points, Ahmad Starks is averaging 12.5 points, and Roberto Nelson is averaging 11.2 points. As a team Oregon State is averaging 83.4 points, 18.3 assists, and they are shooting 49.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 64.8 points and their opponents shoot 41.1 percent. Oregon State is 2-0 on the road thus far this year.

Washington is 1-4 against the spread following a win, 4-9 against the spread in their last 13 home games, and 1-5 against the spread against the Pac-12. Oregon State is 8-1-1 against the spread in their last 10 games overall, 5-1-1 against the spread following a win, and 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games.

The total in this one is set at 158 and while these are the teams who could get over that number I don’t see it happening in a conference opener.
