Tennessee Titans vs. New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints visit the Tennessee Titans in a battle of playoff contenders in Week 14. The Saints are -3.5 point favorites over the Titans with an over/under point total set at 48.
The New Orleans Saints dissected a hobbled Lions team last Sunday night as Drew Brees completed 72% of his passes with three touchdowns. The Saints have looked unstoppable when their offense is gelling, but the team’s road performance this year hasn’t instilled the same level of confidence. New Orleans survived in OT in their most recent test away from home in Atlanta but prior to that the Saints lost to both the Rams and the Bucs. While Brees and his cast of receivers may prefer playing in a dome, it’s hard to imagine the passing offense experiences too much decline in this contest, especially with the emergence of Darren Sproles catching passes out of the backfield to keep defenses honest about playing deep. The Saints should be most worried about defending Chris Johnson, who may finally be realizing his potential after a lackluster start to the season.
The Tennessee Titans aren’t going away in the AFC South divisional race as the team won on the road last week in Buffalo to keep pace. With Chris Johnson coming off back to back 150+ yard performances, the Titans figure to rely heavily on the ground game in this contest, setting up play action for Matt Hasslebeck, who has been playing the role of game manager as of late. Getting a lead early will be critical for Tennessee’s game plan of running the football and limiting Drew Brees’ time on the field. Statistically, the Titans defense isn’t amazing, but the unit has looked solid recently, most notably putting the clamps on Cam Newton.
The Saints have a tendency to transform into a different team when playing on grass on the road, so I’m hesitant to back them even though I believe this offense could score 30 points any time they take the field. This is practically a playoff game for the Titans while the Saints are a bit more comfortable atop their division, I’ll bite on the home dog.
