Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Cornell Big Red
The Penn State Nittany Lions play their last game before starting their Big Ten schedule as they host the Cornell Big Red. The Nittany Lions are -8.5 point favorites over the Big Red with an over/under point total set at 128.
Penn State finally got a win last time out as Patrick Chambers’ team ended their three game losing streak by beating lowly Mount St. Mary’s. It’s been a rough start for PSU and with a challenging conference schedule on the way it doesn’t look like it will be smooth sailing in the near future. Tim Frazier is averaging 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 7.2 assists, Jermaine Marshall is averaging 9.3 points, Cammeron Woodyard is averaging 7.7 points and 4.8 rebounds, and Billy Oliver is averaging 7.4 points and 4.1 rebounds. As a team Penn State is averaging 63.2 points and they are shooting 39.5 percent from the floor while defensively they allow 61.2 points and their opponents shoot 40.2 percent. The Nittany Lions are 5-2 at home this season and haven’t beaten a team with an RPI better than 150.
The Cornell Big Red played hard against Illinois on Monday and although they only lost by four they still dropped to a losing record on the season. It’s been that type of year for Cornell already as they have lost their share of close games. Drew Ferry leads the Big Red with 14 points per game, Josh Figini averages 9.7 points, and Chris Wroblewski averages 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. As a team Cornell averages 68.6 points per game while they shoot 41.7 percent and defensively they allow 70.7 points per game and their opponents shoot 42.6 percent from the floor. With some strong competition in the Ivy League this season it may be a down year for Cornell but they will have a chance to make some noise against a big conference team here.
Penn State is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games against the Ivy League, 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games following a straight up win. Cornell is 4-1 against the spread in their last five road games against a team with a winning home record, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven against the Big Ten, and 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games overall.
This game looks like a coin flip and getting this many points with a Cornell team who have lost to better by less seems like an outright gimme.
