New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins
The New York Giants have the playoffs on their mind as they host their NFC rivals the Washington Redskins. The Giants are -7 point favorites over the Redskins with an over/under point total of 45.5.
After losing four consecutive games and then trailing by two scores with minutes remaining on Sunday night in a pivotal game at Dallas, Tom Coughlin’s team rallied for the win and first place in the NFC East. With the win came control of their own destiny in the playoff picture but with three games left there is plenty of work to do if the Giants want to be playing in January and beyond. Eli Manning has completed 62 percent of his passes for 4,105 yards with 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Ahmad Bradshaw is healthy again and he is averaging 3.8 yards per carry and he has five touchdowns and with Bradshaw back Brandon Jacobs is also more effective and he is averaging 3.7 yards per carry and has seven touchdowns. Victor Cruz leads New York in receptions with 68 and seven touchdowns, Hakeem Nicks has 65 catches, and Jake Ballard has 37 catches. Defensively the Giants have 36 sacks, 11 fumble recoveries, and 15 interceptions with a plus four turnover ratio and they allow 391.6 yards and 26.8 points per game. Antrel Rolle has 77 tackles, Mathias Kiwanuka has 72 tackles, and Jason Pierre-Paul has 12.5 sacks. After this game the Giants face the Jets and then a rematch with the Cowboys.
The Washington Redskins aren’t going to the playoffs or anything close but they have a chance to put a hurting on the Giants season with an upset in this one. It’s year two for Mike Shanahan is Washington and there have been some signs of improvement but this team is missing pieces of the puzzle and has also taken some setbacks due to injuries. Rex Grossman still shows flashes of what it takes to be an NFL QB but overall he has completed 58 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Roy Helu has taken over in the backfield and he’s averaging 4.7 yards per carry and he has scored two touchdowns while catching another 44 passes. Fred Davis has 59 catches and three touchdowns, Jabar Gaffney has 52 catches and four touchdowns, and Santana Moss has 37 catches and three touchdowns. The Redskins defense has 34 sacks, 13 recovered fumbles, and nine interceptions and they have a minus 14 turnover ratio and they allow 333.4 yards and 22.3 points per game. London Fletcher has 134 tackles, DeAngelo Hall has 79 tackles, and Ryan Kerrigan has 6.5 sacks. It would help Washington’s draft position to lose this one but there is no way the Skins lay down against the Giants.
New York is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five home games, 1-11 against the spread in their last 12 home games against a team with a losing road record, and 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four games as a favorite. Washington is 5-1 against the spread in their last six games against the NFC East, 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five December games, and 4-1 against the spread after rushing for more than 150 yards in their previous game. The home team is 3-1-1 against the spread in the last five meetings of these two.
With the Giants looking to improve their playoff chances and the Redskins looking to hurt their rivals chances expect to see some helmet popping and some hard hitting and that should keep this one under the total which is set at 45.5.
