St. John’s Red Storm vs. Texas A&M Aggies
The St. John’s Red Storm and the Texas A&M Aggies look to bounce back from their first losses of the year as they meet at Madison Square Garden in the 2K Sports Classic. The Aggies are -1 point favorites over the Red Storm.
Steve Lavin’s St. John’s Red Storm looked to be in good shape in the second half against Arizona on Thursday but they let it all slip away and in the end it was a nine point loss. Nurideen Lindsey continues to be SJU’s leading scorer as he poured in 18 points and grabbed five rebounds but he turned the ball over seven times before eventually fouling out. Maurice Harkless scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds and D’Angelo Harrison scored 16 points. The Johnnies shot 51.1 percent and made 37.5 percent from beyond the three point arc but missed nine free throws, the exact number of the losing deficit. God’s Gift Aciuwa scored just four points, over 10 points below his season’s average and he will be counted on to contribute more here.
The Texas A&M Aggies looked strong in their first two games and were favored to get another win but it didn’t work out as they had hoped as they fell to Mississippi State in a game they trailed all the way. Elston Turner had 13 points on Thursday but he was just 5 of 11 from the floor including 1 of 4 from beyond the three point arc. David Lebeau had 11 points and six rebounds but he was just 4 of 13 from the floor. Kourtney Roberson grabbed 10 rebounds but scored just five points while Jamal Branch scored 10 points in 21 minutes by going 4 of 5 from the floor and 2 for 2 from the free throw line. Texas A&M shot 40.7 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the three point line while making 71.4 percent of their free throws but they allowed Mississippi State to shoot 46.2 percent from beyond the three point line. There is little time to reflect on the loss as they play what essentially is a road game in this spot.
St. John’s is 1-4 against the spread in their last five non-conference games and 1-5 against the spread in their last six games overall. Texas A&M is 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against the Big East and 5-2-1 against the spread in their last eight non-conference games.
St. John’s has a home court advantage here but turning the ball over against a team like Texas A&M will kill their hopes of winning this one in a hurry.
