Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Rider Broncos
The Rider Broncs look for their first victory of the season on the road at the Pittsburgh Panthers in Sunday afternoon action. The Broncs opened the season with an 83-57 loss to Robert Morris Friday while the Panthers throttled Albany 89-56. The Panthers are -21 point favorites over the Broncs.
Rider fell victim to a few early runs by Robert Morris where their offense and defense was nowhere to be found and after 30 minutes the Broncs were staring at a 40-20 hole. Rider was much more competitive in the second half but the damage was done with the Colonials hitting 46% from the field with the Broncs able to connect at just a 37% pace. The news was even worse as the Colonials owned the offensive glass 19-14 and were very sloppy with their ball handling with 25 turnovers. Anthony Myles led the Broncs with 20 points on 5 of 13 shooting with five turnovers while Jeff Jones added 14 points on only 3 of 11 from the field with six turnovers before fouling out. The Broncs have lost some firepower from a season ago and can’t overcome opponents when they are out rebounded on the offensive glass combined with numerous miscues.
Like their counterparts, Pittsburgh lost some talent but proved to have more than enough on opening day with a 33 point victory over Albany. The Panthers made sure the Great Danes wouldn’t be hanging around to make things uncomfortable and possibly pull an upset by racing out to a ten point lead five minutes and finishing the first half with 47-26 bulge to effectively end this. The Panthers shot 54% from the floor and held a 35-23 advantage on the backboards including 15 offensive pulls. Pitt was prolific behind the arc with a 13 of 22 performance and held a 24-7 edge in assists as they were simply bigger and faster than Albany. Ashton Gibbs poured in 21 points on 8 of 17 accuracy with seven assists and one turnover but Tray Woodall was the offensive star with a game high 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting including five threes while also handing out a game best ten helpers.
Pittsburgh doesn’t have the weapons we’ve seen in the past few years but the Panthers aren’t lacking for talent either. Rider has lost some valuable production which they obviously missed against Robert Morris. I think the Broncs miss this production once again in a name the score type game.
