New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons
The New Orleans Saints visit the Atlanta Falcons for an NFC South showdown in Week Ten. The Saints are -1 point favorites over the Falcons with an over/under point total set at 51.
The New Orleans Saints responded to their loss in St. Louis with a vengeance last week as the Bucs were the unfortunate victims of 453 yards of total offense. Drew Brees calmly completed 75% of his passes on the afternoon as he continues a stellar season with over 3,000 yards, 71% completions, 21 TD’s and a somewhat alarming 11 interceptions. The Saints have often looked like a contender under Brees’ direction this year, so with the division up for grabs and a lackluster wildcard frontier as of now, you have to figure this is a playoff team at the moment. New Orleans engaged in two tight battles with Atlanta last season, with each team winning on the other’s turf in a pair of three point games. The Saints should move the ball offensively in this contest, but defending Michael Turner and the Falcon’s receivers could prove challenging for a defense that has playmakers but lacks consistency.
The Atlanta Falcons have won three straight games, most recently terrorizing the woeful Colts on the road in Indy. Rookie receiver Julio Jones seems to be finding his stride as of late, having racked up over 100 yards in three of his last four outings. With the offense seemingly clicking on all cylinders with a wealth of different options, the Falcons biggest test here should be defending the pass as the unit ranks 19th in the league allowing 245 yards through the air per game. Atlanta will likely rely on its pass rush to ease the burden on the secondary in order to do so as players like John Abraham are capable of generating sacks and pressure. If the Saints can establish the run though as they did last week (195 yards on the ground), it could be open season for Brees with play action in his pocket.
The Falcons play great at the Georgia Dome but home field won’t matter as much here against a Saints team that’s played plenty in this venue. I like Saints minus the 1 in this game.
