Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes
The Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Iowa Hawkeyes close out their Big Ten regular seasons as they meet on Friday in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers are -10.5 point favorites over the Hawkeyes.
While it won’t be a Big Ten Championship Game appearance in their first season in the Big Ten for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, It has been a solid year and a learning experience as Bo Pelini’s team got their first chance to run through a Big Ten schedule. QB Taylor Martinez has looked good in spots while at other times his lack of big time throwing ability has hurt him as he has completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,810 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 817 yards and nine touchdowns. Rex Burkhead is averaging five yards per carry for 1,108 yards and 14 touchdowns while catching 15 passes and scoring two more touchdowns. Kenny Bell leads the Nebraska receivers with 24 catches and two touchdowns and Brandon Kinnie has 20 catches and 246 yards but clearly these aren’t the kind of numbers which show enough balance to get it done this year. The Huskers’ defense has nine interceptions, 16 sacks, and seven fumble recoveries for a minus one turnover differential. Lavonte David leads the Black Shirt Defense with 114 tackles and Daimion Stafford and Will Compton have 70 tackles each and Cameron Meredith has five sacks. In the Big Ten where tie ins to big bowl games mean everything a win here will put Nebraska in a nice spot for bowl season.
It’s been an up and down down season for Kirk Ferrentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes and they look to end it on an up as they finish their regular season in Lincoln. Expectations were high for QB James Vandenberg and he has completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,624 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions. Marcus Coker is averaging five yards per carry for 1,297 yards and 14 touchdowns. Marvin McNutt, Jr has turned in an outstanding year catching 74 passes for 1,240 yards and 12 touchdowns and Keenan Davis has 41 catches and four touchdowns. The Iowa defense has nine interceptions, nine fumble recoveries, and 20 sacks for a plus four turnover margin. Christian Kirksey has 93 tackles, James Morris has 92 tackles, and Mike Daniels has six sacks and Broderick Binns has five. Iowa has been outgained on the ground this season and have slightly outgained their opponents in the air.
Nebraska is 3-8-1 against the spread in their last 12 games overall, 1-3-1 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 1-6 against the spread in their last seven home games. Iowa is 3-7-1 against the spread in their last 11 Big Ten games, 1-6 against the spread in their last seven road games, and 10-4 against the spread in their last 14 road games against a team with a winning home record.
The Huskers are tough and are even tougher at home but this is a big number agaisnt a team who can match up with Nebraska and probably has the better offense. Nebraska gets the win but double digits is too much to cover.
