UAB Blazers vs. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

The UAB Blazers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs meet for an out of conference week six College football match up.  The Bulldogs are -17 point favorites over the Blazers with an over/under point total set at 55.

The Alabama-Birmingham Blazers are still looking for their first win of the 2011 season but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been competitive playing in several tight games that didn’t go their way. The Blazers mixed it up last week giving Jonathan Perry the start at QB but whether It be Perry or Bryan Ellis the results have been the same, a loss and a failure to throw a touchdown pass. Pat Shed has gotten he bulk of the carries in the backfield but he’s averaging just 3.5 yards per carry and has just 128 yards and a touchdown. Jackie Williams had eight catches last week against Troy giving him 23 on the season to lead the tam while Patrick Hearn has 12 catches for 148 yards. UAB has four interceptions, six fumble recoveries but just one sack as it has been the defense which has kept their last two games competitive. James Bender leads the Blazers in tackles with 44 followed by Lamanski Ware with 34 and Marvin Burdette with 33. It is already becoming a long year in Birmingham and the Blazers face another stiff test and a hungry team here.

The season started with high hoped for the Mississippi State Bulldogs but those hopes of following up on last year’s New Year’s Day bowl win are being quickly erased. While Chris Relf has had another year to work in Dan Mullen’s offense the results just haven’t been there as Relf has completeds just 58.8 percent of his passes for 814 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions while he has rushed for another 218 yards. Vick Ballard is averaging 6.5 yards per carry as he’s rushed for 430 yards and five touchdowns. Most of the receivers have not put up any kind of numbers as Chris Smith leads the Bulldogs with 13 catches for just 109 yards, Arceto Clark has 10 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown, and Chad Bumphis has nine catches for 114 yards and a score. The MSU defense has 10 sacks, eight interceptions, and three fumble recoveries but they have had some tough break downs against the better teams as all three of their losses have come in the SEC. Cam Lawrence leads Mississippi State in tackles with 33 followed by Charles Mitchell 31.5 and Brandon Wilson with 30. While this is a non-conference game, this is a must win for the Mississippi State.

UAB is 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games against the SEC, and 0-4 against the spread in their last four home games. Mississippi State is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven non-conference games, 1-4 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, and 0-4 against the spread in their last four games. The road team has covered four in a row in this series.

UAB has used some big numbers to cover recently and I see them doing the same here. Mississippi State may even get a scare here but in the end they just have too much talent and get the win but the Blazers keep it close enough.
