TCU Horned Frogs vs. New Mexico Lobos

The TCU Horned Frogs look for their fifth win of the season as they host the winless New Mexico Lobos.  The Horned Frogs are -40.5 point favorites over the Lobos.

After years of dominating the Mountain West and much of the College Football landscape, Gary Patterson’s TCU Horned Frogs are undergoing a little bit of a rebuilding process this season. Texas Christian is anywhere from the bottom of the college football world but after seeing them run the table, go the Rose Bowl, and play dominating defense, anything less, like the product we are seeing this year, is a drop off. With Andy Dalton gone at QB Casey Pachall has taken over and while he is more athletic than Dalton it’s just tough to replace the four years of leadership Dalton provided. Ed Wesley is as talented as just about any running back in the nation and Mathew Tucker has been getting carries as well and should see action here. Josh Boyce is the leading TCU receiver with 37 catches and five touchdowns and Skye Dawson has 22 catches as 13 different players have caught passes for TCU. While it may not be the great TCU defense we have grown accustomed to but they still have 11 sacks, five interceptions, and five fumble recoveries. Tekerrein Cuba has 44 tackles and Jason Verrett has 31 while Stansl Maponga has 4.5 sacks.

Another year of football and another year of losing for the New Mexico Lobos and after winning just one game in each of his last years Mike Lockley he may be hard pressed to even equal that total this year. B.R. Holbrook has been awful at QB completing 57.3 percent of his passes and Tarean Austin has been worse completing just 51.8 percent of his passes and they have a combined six touchdowns. Autin leads the Lobos in rushing yardage with 203 yards and Crusoe Gongbay has four rushing TD’s. Ty Kirk has 41 catches with none of them scoring and Deon Long has 31 catches with three touchdowns. Getting roasted on defense has become a trademark of New Mexico football and this year is no different as the Lobos have allowed more than 40 points for five consecutive games including over 50 twice. Carmen Messina has 36.5 tackles to lead the team while Bubba Forrest has 33.5.

TCU is 4-0 against the spread in their last four following a bye week, 25-12 against the spread in their last 37 home games, and 0-4 against the spread following a cover. New Mexico is 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games, 3-7 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games as an underdog. The favorite has covered seven of the last eight in this series.

This game reeks of an epic beat down and while TCU has had some frustrations this season, they get them all out of their system here and empty the bench for a score-a-thon on the hapless Lobos. The number here suggests a one sided game but I don’t see the six touchdowns being enough to help New Mexico in this spot.
