Southern Methodist Mustangs vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the SMU Mustangs meet up for what looks to be high scoring College Football on Saturday.  The Golden Hurricanes are -3.5 point favorites over the Mustangs with an over/under point total set at 67.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane are riding a three game losing streak and while they have three losses this season, all of them came to teams ranked in the top 10, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Boise. While this may not be the best Tulsa team we have seen recently, they are getting it done ad still have time to improve heading into the final third of their season. Golden Hurricane QB G.J. Kinnie is a seasoned veteran at this point and he’s completed 63.8 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Ja’Terian Douglas is averaging 7.9 yards per carry and has three touchdowns while Trey Watts is averaging 5.1 yards per carry and has 452 total yards on the ground. With Damerius Johnson out for academic reasons Willie Carter leads Tulsa with 36 receptions for 529 yards and Bryan Burnham has 30 catches with six of them going for touchdowns. The Tulsa defense looks almost too relaxed at times, especially when playing with a lead but they have 12 interceptions, six fumble recoveries, and 11 sacks thus far. Curnelius Arnick is the Golden Hurricane’s leading tackler with 86, Shawn Jackson has 55, and Dexter McCoil has 52 and three interceptions. Tulsa is a good team but not a great one and it’s games like this which will serve as a barometer going forward as well find out plenty about what this team is made of.

After losing last year in the Conference Championship game June Jones had high hopes for his SMU Mustangs and for the most p[art his team has played well but they are clearly a team with some work still ahead of them. QB J.J. McDermott has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,840 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Zach Line has rushed for 665 yards and 13 touchdowns to lead the Mustang ground game. Darius Johnson has 43 catches and four touchdowns and Cole Beasley has 41 receptions. The SMU defense has recovered four fumbles, just one interception, and 18 sacks on the year thus far. Taylor Reed has 47 tackles, Ja’Gared Davis has 36 tackles, and Ryan Smith has 33 to lead the SMU defense. While SMU was an underdog last week against Southern Miss it was a game which was winnable for them and they simply didn’t show up.

Tulsa is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 conference games, 12-5 against the spread in their last 17 overall, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games. SMU is 4-1 against the spread int heri last five games overall, 1-4 against the spread in their last five as a road underdog, and 5-2 against the spread after allowing over 450 yards in their previous game. SMU has covered in six of the last seven meetings of these two.

Expect to see a much more focused SMU team than we saw last week and while I am not so sure it is enough to get them the win, with the points it should be close enough at least for the cover.
