Seattle Seahawks vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Seattle Seahawks look to make it two wins in a row as they face the Atlanta Falcons who are still looking for their first road win.  The Falcons are -4.5 point favorites over the Seahawks with an over/under point total set at 41.5.

Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll knows a thing or two about building a football team and he knows sometimes you need to take a step back before you can go forward. While the Seahawks made the playoffs last season there are big changes in Seattle primarily at QB. Tavarris Jackson sometimes appears lost on the football field but he has completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 527 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions but he has been sacked 14 times. Sidney Rice has been brought in with Jackson and thus far he has caught eight passes while Seattle’s other big acquisition, tight end Zach Miller, has five catches. The Seahawks defense has five sacks and with two interceptions and three fumble recoveries they are minus two in turnover ratio. Matt McCoy leads Seattle in tackles with 15 followed by Aaron Curry with 13 while David Hawthorne and Chris Clemons have 12 each. With the NFC West wide open and with Seattle still getting it together, it isn’t going to take too much for the Seahawks to be a factor in the race this season.

The Atlanta Falcons are in the basement of the NFC South and while it’s early in the season it’s a tough spot to be in one of the tougher divisions in football. While it’s premature to push the panic button there has to be some concern with the Atlanta pass protection as Matt Ryan is getting hit plenty in the pocket. Ryan has completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 844 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions and he has been sacked 13 times. Ryan has more options to throw to than ever as Roddy White has 20 catches, Tony Gonzalez has 14, and rookie Julio Jones has 13. The Falcons defense has four interceptions and three fumble recoveries while sacking opposing QB’s five times but it all adds up to a minus two turnover differential. Sean Weatherspoon has been a tackling machine with 31 tackles and Curtis Lofton has 29 while Dunta Robinson has 18. This is Atlanta’s third road game in their first four games and while their schedule is back loaded with home games they can’t afford to fall too far behind as the NFC should have at least two playoff teams.

Seattle is 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, 6-1 against the spread in their last seven home games against a team with a losing road record, and 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games as an underdog. Atlanta is 6-0 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 5-1 against the spread in their last six games as a road favorite, and 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 road games. The underdog is 5-2 against the spread in the last seven meetings of these two.

This one is tough because Seattle is clearly rebuilding while the Falcons are a team that should already be there but thus far have been dealt a tough schedule. I can see the Falcons getting the win here but Seattle getting the cover in a tight one.
