Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Navy Midshipmen

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish look to bounce back from last week’s tough loss as they host the Navy Midshipmen.  The Fighting Irish are -20 point favorites over the Midshipmen with an over/under point total set at 61.5.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish haven’t beaten Navy in two years and while Brian Kelly’s team is much improved and Navy is having a down year, this should still provide a test in South Bend. Irish QB Tommy Rees was banged around last week but he should be good to go here and for the season he has completed 65.5 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Cierre Wood has been the primary ball carrier for ND this season averaging 5.6 yards per carry gaining 655 yards and scoring six touchdowns and Jonas Gray is averaging 8.5 yards per carry with five touchdowns. Michael Floyd leads Notre Dame in receiving with 57 catches, Tyler Eifert has 39, and Theo Riddick has 29. The Fighting Irish defense has six interceptions, has recovered two fumbles, and has sacked opposing QB’s 15 times. Manti Te’o leads Notre Dame with 69 tackles, Harrison Smith has 54, and Robert Blanton has 43. Notre Dame’s losses have all come in games where they have had costly turnovers that went for scores and if they can avoid those Notre Dame has an offense that can put points on the board and enough athletes on defense to get the job done.

The Navy Midshipman are having one of their worst seasons in recent memory and they come into this game losers of their last four games in a row.  QB Kriss Proctor is running the offense and he’s completed 52.8 percent of his passes with six touchdowns while leading the team in rushing with 591 yards and eight touchdowns. Alexander Teich is averaging 4.8 yards per carry, Gee Gee Greene is averaging 8.5 yards per carry, and John Howell is averaging 11.6 yards and he has four touchdowns. Brandon Turner and Matt Aiken have nine catches each with Turner having three touchdowns and Aiken having two. The Navy defense has six interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, and eight sacks thus far. Matt Warrick leads the Middies with 62 tackles, Tra’ves Bush has 51 tackles, and David Sperry has 40. Navy has taken some bad losses and some close losses this year but they have beaten ND three of the past four seasons.

Notre Dame is 5-2 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 0-4-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 4-10-2 against the spread in their last 16 home games. Navy is 8-1 against the spread in their last nine games as an underdog, 9-3 against the spread against a team with a winning record, and 5-1 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover. The road team has covered 14 of the last 16 meetings in this series.

Notre Dame has done a lot of things better than we have seen them do this season and Navy has been uncharacteristically struggling but ND has failed to solve the Navy puzzle in recent years and until they do this is way too many points.
