Green Bay Packers vs. St. Louis Rams

The Green Bay Packers look to go to 6-0 as they host the St. Louis Rams in week six NFL action.  The Packers are -15.5 favorites over the Rams with an over/under point total set at 48.

While it hasn’t been smooth sailing, the Green Bay Packers have picked up where they left off on last year’s playoff run that made them Super Bowl Champions. Once again this season the Packers seem to endure major injuries week after week and once again the put it all together and pull out win after win. Aaron Rodgers has completed 71.7 percent of his passes for 1721 yards and14 touchdowns while throwing just two interceptions but Rodgers life got a little more difficult as left tackle Chad Clifton is out indefinitely. James Starks and Ryan Grant are sharing time in the backfield with Starks averaging 4.4 yards per carry and Grant averaging 4.5. Greg Jennings is still Rodgers main target catching 29 passes for 448 yards and four touchdowns and Jermichael Finley has 22 catches and three touchdowns but he had some bad drops last week in Atlanta. The Packers defense has allowed the 10th most yards in the NFL this year but like last season they come up with big plays with 12 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and 10 interceptions. Desmond Bishop has 43 tackles and three sacks, Morgan Burnett has 38 tackles and three interceptions, and Jarius Wynn has three sacks. The Packers look to be on a collision course with the post season but the injuries along the offensive line are going to make it difficult as the season goes on.

The St. Louis Rams are one of two teams in the NFL that have yet to win a game and since they drafted a franchise QB just two years ago, picking first and getting Andrew Luck isn’t on their agenda. The Rams just missed the playoffs last season but this year they are taking a step back though it may help them build for the future. QB Sam Bradford has felt the heat this season getting sacked 18 times while completing just 49.7 percent of his passes for 849 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Steven Jackson was injured but coming off of the bye week he should be close to 100 percent and he’s averaging 5.4 yards per carry and Cadillac Williams has filled in averaging four yards per carry. Brandon Gibson is St. Louis’ top receiver with 13 catches followed by Mike Sims-Walker with 11 but with Bradford running for his life the passing numbers are down. The Rams defense is sixth worse in yards allowed at 404.5 per game including a league worst 179.8 yards on the ground. The St. Louis defense has eight sacks, four fumble recoveries , and three interceptions. James Laurinaitis leads the Rams with 31 tackles followed by Justin King with 24 and Bradley Fletcher with 23. The Rams have shown flashes but they are going to need to getter protection for Bradford if they hope to have any success and get the defense off of the field.

Green Bay is 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games as a home favorite, 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games against the NFC, and 10-3-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record. St. Louis is 0-5 against the spread in their last five games as an underdog, 1-4 against the spread following a loss, and 3-11 against the spread as an underdog of 10.5 or more. The favorite have covered six in a row in this series.

The Packers are clearly the better team but this is a ton of points for an NFL game.  I am taking the Rams plus the 15.5.
