San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Two Rivals and two of the best pitchers in baseball face off as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants.  The Dodgers are -140 favorites over the Giants with an over/under run total set at 5.5.

The Los Angeles Dodgers seemingly have been out of it since the season started but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a roster loaded with talent that can compete with anyone on any given night. The Dodgers have won three games in a row, are 6-4 in their last 10 games, and are 40-38 at home this season. As a team Los Angeles is hitting .257 led by Matt Kemp at .320, Andre Ethier at .292, and Jamey Carroll at .286. As a team the Dodgers pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.61 with the starters at 3.50 and the bullpen at 3.87. For game one against the Giants Los Angeles starts Clayton Kershaw who may be the best pitcher in baseball right now. For the season Kershaw has allowed 164 hits and 56 earned runs while striking out 236 in 218.2 innings of work.

The San Francisco Giants are on the brink of elimination but like last season they simply refuse to give up. The Giants have won eight games in a row, are 8-2 in their last 10 games, and trail the Arizona Diamondbacks by five games in the National League West. As a team San Francisco is hitting just .241 led by Carlos Beltran at .333, Pablo Sandoval at .310, and Nate Schierholtz at .278. As a team the Giants pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.09 with the starters at 3.18 and the bullpen at 2.89. For game one at Los Angeles San Francisco starts Tim Lincecum who doesn’t have the win-loss record we are used to seeing but it has been more of a byproduct of the lack of run support he has been getting. For the season Linceum has allowed 160 hits and 59 earned runs while striking out 212 in 205 innings of work.

Los Angeles is 4-1 in their last five home games, 19-7 in their last 26 games overall, and 5-0 in Kershaw’s last five starts in game one of a series. San Francisco is 4-0 in their last four road games, 3-7 in their last 10 games as an underdog, and 8-2 in Lincecum’s last 10 starts as an underdog. The Giants are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings of these two.

Hits and runs should be at a premium and I like the Giants pen just a little better and give them the slightest of edges here.  I’m taking the Giants plus the 120 today.
