Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros meet for game one of their series on Monday at PNC Park.  The Pirates are -150 favorites over the Astros with an over/under run total set at 8.

There will be plenty of positives to come out of this season for the Pittsburgh Pirates but not many of them will come from the second half of the season when they basically collapsed. Pittsburgh is 3-7 in their last 10 games, 31-38 at home this season, and 19.5 games back in the N.L. Central. As a team Pittsburgh is hitting .243 led by Neil Walker at .271, Andrew McCutchen at .269, and Jose Tabata at .268. As a team the Pirates pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.86 with the starters at 3.94 and the bullpen at 3.71. For game one against the Astros Pittsburgh starts James McDonald who lost last time out following two no decisions. For the season McDonald has allowed 155 hits and 69 earned runs while striking out 126 in 151 innings of work.

The Houston Astros are going to finish the season with the worst record in baseball as it’s just a matter of how bad it gets after they unloaded all of their best players. Houston has lost three in a row, are 5-5 in their last 10 games, and are 21-48 on the road this season. As a team Houston is hitting .260 led by Jason Burgeois at .287, Carlos Lee at .277, and Brett Wallace at .263. As a team the Astros pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.54 with the starters at 4.60 and the bullpen at 4.40. For game one at Pittsburgh Houston starts Henry Sosa who has won his last two starts. For the season Sosa has allowed 23 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 23 in 29 innings of work.

Pittsburgh is 6-16 in their last 22 home games, 1-8 in their last nine games as a favorite, and 1-6 in McDonald’s last seven starts. Houston is 5-2 in their last seven against the N.L. Central, 24-58 in their last 82 overall, and 7-19 in their last 26 game one of a series. Houston has won four of the last five meetings of these two.

While Pittsburgh has the better record, Houston has played better of late and I give the Astros the edge here.  Take the Astros plis the 130.
