Oakland Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers
The Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers close out their series on Sunday in Oakland. The Tigers are -180 favorites over the Athletics with an over/under run total set at 7.
While it isn’t the season they had hoped for, the Oakland Athletics have a chance to salvage something as with a win they can sweep the A.L. Central Champions. Jemile Weeks had three hits and Coco Crisp, Josh Willingham, and Scott Sizemore each had two hits as the A’s scored five runs on 12 hits. On the mound Gio Gonzalez was dominating as he allowed eight hits and a run while striking out four over seven innings of work to get his 14th win of the season. For Sunday’s game Oakland starts Guillermo Moscoso who has won his last two decisions. For the season Moscoso has allowed 96 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 64 over 115 innings of work.
The Detroit Tigers have clinched the A.L. Central and while they have little left to play for, they still would like to have some momentum as they hit the post season. Magglio Ordonez had three hits and scored a run and Ryan Raburn and Victor Martinez each had two hits as the Tigers scored three runs on 11 hits. On the mound Rick Porcello allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out four over seven innings of work to take his ninth loss of the season. For Sunday’s game Detroit starts Justin Veralnder who is the probable American League Cy Young Award winner and who leads the Majors with 23 wins. For the season Verlander has allowed 163 hits and 62 earned runs while striking out 238 over 236 innings of work.
Oakland is 5-9 in their last 14 games against a team with a winning record, 1-7 in their last eight games as a home underdog, and 6-2 in Moscosos’ last eight home starts. Detroit is 5-2 in their last seven games against a team with a losing record, 35-17 in their last 52 games overall, and 13-3 in Verlander’s last 16 road starts.
While there isn’t much value here going against Verlander this year isn’t something that has paid off too often. Take the Tigers minus the 180.
