Oakland Athletics vs. Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers approach their magic number as the visit the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.  The Tigers are -120 favorites over the Athletics with an over/under run total set at 7.5.

The Oakland Athletics are playing out the string but they still have some opportunities to play spoiler. The Athletics have lost their last two games, are 4-6 in their last 10 games, and 40-34 at home this season. As a team Oakland is hitting .246 led by Chad Pennington at .268, Jemile Weeks at .301, and Coco Crisp at .268. As a team the A’s pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.80 with the starters at 3.79 and the bullpen at 3.83. For game one against the Tigers Oakland starts Brandon McCarthy who has lost two of his last three starts. For the season McCarthy has allowed 149 hits and 57 earned runs while striking out 108 over 148.2 innings of work.

The Detroit Tigers are on a run as they are within three games of clinching a spot in the post season. The Tigers have won 12 games in a row, are 42-22 on the road this year, and they have a 13 game lead in the American League Central. As a team Detroit is hitting .275 led by Miguel Cabrera at .333, Victor Martinez at .325, and Jhonny Peralta at .305. As a team the Tigers pitching staff has a combined ERA of 4.06 with the starters at 4.07 and the bullpen at 3.83. For game one in Oakland Detroit starts Max Scherzer who has won three of his last four decisions. For the season Scherzer has allowed 188 hits and 85 earned runs while striking out 154 in 179.1 innings of work.

Oakland is 8-3 in their last 11 home games against a team with a winning road record, 2-5 in their last seven against the American League Central, and 8-3 in McCarthy’s last 11 starts. Detroit is 11-1 in their last 12 road games against a right handed starter, 20-7 in their last 27 games as a road favorite, and 8-0 in Scherzer’s last eight starts against the A.L. West.

The under is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings of these two and I see it being that way in this one as well as Oakland is a pitchers ballpark and we have two pitchers who have gotten it done.  Take the under 7.5

Under 7.5
