New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees meet for the rubber match of their series at Fenway Park.  The Red Sox  are -210 favorites over the Yankees with an over/under run total set at 9.5.

With the win on Wednesday the Boston Red Sox guaranteed that they will end this series in first place in the American League East and with the way the race has been, that’s no small accomplishment. On Wednesday David Ortiz, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Jason Varitek all homered as the Red Sox scored nine runs off of 12 hits. On the mound “Yankee Killer” Josh Beckett allowed six hits and five runs, four of them earned while striking out eight over seven innings of work to earn his 12th win of the season. For Thursday’s series finale Boston starts Jon Lester who has won his last three starts. For the season Lester has allowed 131 hits and 55 earned runs while striking out 150 in 160 innings of work.

The New York Yankees battled back after being down on Wednesday but in the end they didn’t have enough to take down the Red Sox on the road. Derek Jeter had two hits and drove in a run, Robinson Cano had a hit, a RBI, and scored a run as did Eric Chavez and Eduardo Nunez as the Yankees scored five times on six hits. On the mound Phil Hughes allowed eight hits and six runs while striking out four over 5.2 innings of work to take his fifth loss of the year while Boone Logan and Luis Ayala were no help from the bullpen. For Thursday’s game New York starts A.J. Burnett who has lost his last two starts allowing 16 runs in 6.2 innings over that span. For the season Burnett has allowed 160 hits and 95 earned runs while striking out 137 over 161 innings of work.

Boston is 5-1 in their last six home games against a right handed starter, 38-18 in their last 56 games overall, and 15-7 in Lester’s last 22 starts. New York is 13-5 in their last 18 road games against a left handed starter, 13-7 in their last 20 road games, and 1-5 in Burnett’s last six starts as an underdog. New York is 2-10 in the last 12 meetings of these two.

This is a bad matchup for the Yankees as Burnett just isn’t a viable option on the mound in this spot.  Take the Red Sox minus the 210.
