New York Mets vs. Chicago Cubs

The New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs meet on Sunday Night. The Cubs are -125 favorites over the Mets with an over/under run total set at 8.

The New York Mets are trying to finish over .500 and while it is a modest goal, with the season they have had it wouldn’t be a horrible finish. On Saturday the Mets rallied for the lead only to blow it in the ninth inning in a game where Jason Bay, David Wright, and Lucas Duda all had two hits each and the Mets converted 10 hits into four runs for the night. On the mound Chris Capuano allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six over seven innings of work but Bobby Parnell allowed two runs in the ninth inning for his fifth blown save and his sixth loss of the year. For Sunday’s game New York starts Miguel Batista who makes his third start since becoming a member of the Mets. For his starts for the Mets Batista has allowed 11 hits and three earned runs while striking out six over 12 innings of work.

The Chicago Cubs keep plugging away but the end result is another lost season despite picking up wins like they did on Saturday. Starlin Castro and Marlon Byrd each had two hits and Reed Johnson had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run as the Cubs scored five times on nine hits. On the mound Randy Wells allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out three over seven innings to not factor in the decision while Kerry Wood blew his sixth save allowing three hits and two runs but it turned into his third win and Carlos Marmol earned his 34th save of the year. For Sunday’s game Chicago starts Matt Garza  who has won three of his last four starts For the season Garza has allowed 161 hits and 65 earned runs while striking out 171 in 166 innings of work.

New York is 5-2 in their last seven home games against a team with a winning record, 11-6 in their lst 17 games overall, and 1-4 in their last five games as a home underdog. Chicago is 5-2 in their last seven games as a road favorite, 3-7 in their last 10 road games, and 1-4 in Garza’s last five starts against the N.L. East. Chicago is 2-5 in their last seven games in New York.

The Cubs on the road aren’t a great bet but betting against Batista has proven to be a good one no matter where he is.  Take the Cubs minus the 125.
