The Kansas City Royals rallied on Friday Night but they couldn’t rally enough as they dropped game one of their series to the Cleveland Indians. Alex Gordon hit a two run home run, Alcides Escobar had two hits and a RBI, and Melky Cabrera had a hit and scored a run as the Royals scored four runs on seven hits. On the mound Bruce Chen was in trouble from the outset as he allowed eight hits and five earned runs to take his sixth loss of the year. For Saturday’s rematch Kansas City starts Luke Hochevar who won last time out to end a streak of four Royals losses in a row in games he had started. For the season Hochevar has allowed 178 hits and 98 earned runs while striking out 108 in 177.1 innings of work.
The Cleveland Indians didn’t gain any ground on the Detroit Tigers on Friday but they didn’t lose any ground either. Asdrubal Cabrera had a two run home run, Jason Donald hit a solo home run, and Kosuke Fukudome had three hits as the Indians scored five runs on nine hits for the night. On the mound starter Justin Masterson allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out four over seven innings of work to earn his 11th win of the year and Chris Perez earned his 31st save of the season. For Saturday’s rematch Cleveland starts David Huff who didn’t allow a run in his last outing. For the season Huff has allowed 21 hits and six earned runs while striking out 19 in 26 innings of work.
Kansas City is 5-12 in their last 17 home games against a team with a losing road record, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 4-1 in Hochevar’s last five home starts. Cleveland is 6-2 in their last eight games overall, 1-5 in their last six games as a road underdog, and 2-9 in Huff’s last 11 starts. Cleveland is 8-3 in their last 11 games in Kansas City.
