Georgia Bulldogs vs. Mississippi St. Bulldogs

It’s a battle of the Bulldogs as Georgia battles Mississippi State between the hedges in Athens in a SEC college football showdown.  Georgia is -7.5 point favorites over Mississippi St. with an over/under point total set at 53.5.

While the Georgia Bulldogs have two losses for the season all isn’t lost for Mark Richt’s team as they get plenty of opportunities to prove themselves as the season progresses. After dropping their first two games UGA has rebounded by winning their next two games and tough the wins came against substantially weaker competition than South Carolina and Boise State whom they lost to, the count the same in the record book. Aaron Murray is improving at QB and while he may never reach the lofty expectations that have been placed on him he is putting together solid numbers completing 63.6 percent of his passes for 940 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. Malcolm Mitchell has caught 17 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns while Orson Charles has 13 catches and Tavarres King has 10 and they each have three touchdowns. It’s clear the immediate future for the Dawgs is in the hands of the talented Isaiah Crowell who is averaging 5.3 yards per carry and who has been spelled by the capable Carlton Thomas who is averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Defensively Georgia has six interceptions, four by Brandon Boykin, and three fumble recoveries to go with their five sacks. Jarvis Jones leads the Bulldogs in tackles with 23 followed by Christian Robinson with 21 and Sanders Commings and Michael Gilliard both with 19. With Tennessee, Vandy, and Florida up next Georgia needs to continue to improve if they are going to have a chance to do much.

After blowing out Michigan last year on New Year’s Day the expectation coming into this season for the Mississippi State Bulldogs were to exceed last year’s numbers. While Dan Mullen’s team hasn’t been as good as they have been billed to be, there isn’t much shame in a road loss at Auburn and a home loss to LSU. QB Chris Relf takes on a huge role in Mullen’s offense and while he has been good, he hasn’t been good enough completing 58 percent of his passes for 657 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions while rushing for 233 yards. Vick Ballard remains one of the more under rated running back sin the country as he has rushed for 407 yards and five touchdowns while catching eight passes. In order for the offense to be more effective Chad Bumphis needs to become more involved as he has just seven catches and Jameon Lewis has just six. The MSU defense has eight sacks and five interceptions, three by Jonathan Banks, and three fumble recoveries. Charles Mitchell leads the Bulldogs in tackles with 36 followed by Cam Lawrence with 33 and Brandon Wilson with 32. This is a huge game for Mississippi State as they still seek their first SEC win.

Georgia is 6-2 against the spread in their last eight games as a favorite, 8-17-1 against the spread in their last 26 SEC games, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five home games. Mississippi State is 1-4 against the spread in their last five SEC games, 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games as a road underdog, and 6-2 against the spread in their last eight October games.

I am not sure where the odds makers came up witht this one but no reason not to jump on the over as if it isn’t there by the third quarter it would be a surprise.
