Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox meet for game two of their series at Tropicana Field.  The Rays are -155 favorites over the Red Sox with an over/under run total set at 9.

The Tampa Bay Rays trail the Boston Red Sox by five games in the American League Wild Card race but they have six games left head to head as they helped their cause with a win on Friday. On Friday John Jaso homered, had three RBI’s, and scored twice, Evan Longoria had two hits, and Johnny Damon had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run as the Rays scored seven times off of nine hits in the win. Starter Wade Davis went the distance allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out eight over the full nine innings for his 10th win of the season. For Saturday’s rematch Tampa Bay starts Jeremy Hellickson who won last time out to end a personal two game losing streak. For the season Hellickson has allowed 130 hits and 53 earned runs while striking out 107 in in 164.1 innings of work.

The Boston Red Sox are starting to look over their shoulders as what looked like a sure thing as far as making the post season, doesn’t look to be as certain right now. On Friday Josh Reddick had two hits and jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia each had hits as the Red Sox scored twice off of six hits. Starter John Lackey was hit hard as he allowed five hits and five runs lasting just three innings to take his 12th loss of the season. For Saturday’s game Boston starts Kyle Weiland who makes his second start of the year and his fourth appearance in the Majors. For the season Weiland has allowed 15 hits and nine earned runs while striking out four over 12 innings of work.

Tampa Bay is 5-1 in their last six games overall, 8-2 in their last 10 against the A.L. East, and 5-1 in Hellickson’s last six home starts. Boston is 20-7 in their last 27 game two of a series, 2-5 in their last seven games as an underdog, and 1-5 in their last six games overall. Boston is 4-2 in their last six games at Tampa Bay.

The Red Sox were red hot but they have cooled off and could be in for a dog fight to the finish as they don’t help their cause here.  Take the Rays minus the 155 today.
