Boise St. Broncos vs. Georgia Bulldogs
It’s a monster opening week match up in College Football as the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Boise State Broncos in the Chick-fil-A game in Atlanta. The Bulldogs are -3.5 point favorites over the Broncos with an over/under point total set at 52.5.
While their performance on the field hasn’t been quite up to their standards over the past few seasons, expectations are sky high for Mark Richt and his Georgia Bulldogs this season. Andy Murray is back at QB for his sophomore season and while he has a year under his belt in Richt’s sometimes complex system, he loses A.J. Green as a primary target. Tavarres King and Marlon Brown look to become the next in line of NFL caliber Wide Receivers at UGA but that’s given the Offensive Line does a better job this season of giving Murray time to throw. The big buzz in Athens is a Tailback as the school with a long tradition of big time Running Backs looks to have found the next in line to carry the torch in freshman Isaiah Crowell. Crowell has been banged up a little in Fall practice but he will be the focus when the season starts in earnest. With the buzz surrounding Crowell on offense, it’s the same for Linebacker Ray Drew on the defensive side as he looks to make an impact immediately. JUCO transfer John Jenkins is a beast in the middle of the DL at 340 pounds but Kwame Geathers looked outstanding in the Spring while DeAngelo Tyson moves to end. The secondary returns three starters from last year’s team including Brandon Bykin but they were vulnerable against big plays.
Chris Peterson’s Boise State Broncos are way beyond the novelty stage and are a legitamte BCS Bowl contender every season. This year’s Boise team is a product of a program that is simply in reload mode as they have a pipeline of talent to field top level teams each year out. Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore returns for his senior year at QB and he has one of the best touchdown to interception ratios in the history of the game as well as the FBS record for most wins as a QB losing just twice by a combined four points. Doug Martin is an explosive tailback who averages six yards a pop. While Austin Pettis and Titus Young have left for the NFL Tyler Shoemaker is back as is Tight End Kyle Efaw. Boise is regarded as one of the best defenses in college football returning seven starters from a team that ranked in the top 10 in just about every major defensive category a year ago. Billy Winn, Chase Baker, Shea McClellin, and Tyrone Crawford put together 25.5 sacks last season and the linebacking unit returns intact as well. The Broncos have been producing top level NFL talent in the secondary as well and George Iloka looks to be a leader at Safety and Jamar Taylor gets his chance to be the next great corner. Boise State should be a contender once again this season.
Georgia is 1-4 against the spread in their last five September games, 0-4 against the spread in their last four games as an underdog, and 1-4 against the spread in their last five games overall. Boise State is 4-0 against the spread in their last four neutral site games, 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games as a favorite, and 7-1 against the spread in their last 10 September games.
While both of these teams have solid offenses, big games are won by the defense and this qualifies as a big game. Take the under 52.5 here.
