Washington Nationals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
The Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet for game three of their series in Washington. The Diamondbacks are -140 favorites over the Nationals with an over/under run total set at 8.
It was a night of very little on Tuesday and the Washington Nationals had less of it and lost game two of their series with Arizona. Ian Desmond and Jayson Werth each had two hits and Ryan Zimmerman and Wilson Ramos each had hits but the Nationals couldn’t score a run off of their six hits on the night. Jordan Zimmerman had another tough luck outing as he allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out four over 6.1 innings to take his 11th loss of the season. For Wednesday’s game Washington starts Livan Hernandez who has won two of his last three decisions. For the season Hernandez has allowed 179 hits and 75 earned runs while striking out 92 over 155.2 innings of work.
The Arizona Diamondbacks aren’t playing their best baseball of the season but they continue to play well enough to continue to lead the National League West. On Tuesday Sean Burroughs hit a two run home run and Gerrardo Parra and Miguel Montero each had hits as the Diamondbacks had six hit total on the night. On the mound Ian Kennedy allowed six hits and struck out eight over seven shutout innings to earn his 16th win of the season and J.J. Putz pitched the ninth inning to earn his 31st save of the year. For Wednesday’s game Arizona starts Daniel Hudson who has lost two of his last three starts. For the season Hudson has allowed 180 hits and 73 earned runs while striking out 130 over 171.1 innings of work.
Washington is 16-6 in their last 22 home games against a team with a winning record, 3-7 in their last 10 game three of a series, and 6-14 in Hernandez’s last 20 starts. Arizona is 7-1 in their last eight against a team with a losing record, 1-6 in their last seven games overall, and 15-7 in Hudson’s last 22 starts. Arizona is 2-6 in their last eight games in Washington.
Hudson is a great young talent but he has not had his best stuff of late and looks a little worn out and vulnerable while Hernandez is a crafty veteran who always finds a way to make it work and I give him the edge in this spot. Take the Nationals plus the 120.
