Tampa Rays vs. Oakland Athletics

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Oakland Athletics meet for game two of their series at Tropicana Field.  The Rays are -160 favorites over the Athletics with an over/under run total set at 8.

The Tampa Bat Rays have been moving in reverse since the All Star break not so much by them playing overly poor but more a matter of the team in front of them, the Yankees and the Red Sox, playing well. On Friday B.J. Upton had three hits and two RBI’s, Ben Zobrist had two hits, two RBI’s, and scored three times, and Johnny Damon, Casey Kotchman, and Matt Joyce all had two hits as the Rays scored eight  times off of 14 hits. On the mound starter Jeff Niemann almost went the distance as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out eight over 8.2 innings of work to earn his sixth win while Kyle Farnsworth closed it out getting the save. For Saturday’s rematch Tampa Bay starts Alex Cobb who lost last time out for the first time this season. For the year Cobb has allowed 41 hits and 15 earned runs while striking out 33 in 48.1 innings of work.

The Oakland Athletics have been a team of winning and losing streaks all season long and currently it’s a four game losing streak. On Friday Coco Crisp and Hideki Matsui both homered and Chad Pennington had an RBI as Oakland scored four runs on seven hits. On the mound Guillermo Moscoso allowed six hits and four earned runs while striking out three over 4.2 innings of work to take his sixth loss of the season. On Saturday Oakland looks to bounce back as they start Brandon McCarthy who has won his last three decisions. For the season McCarthy has allowed 106 hits and 40 earned runs while striking out 69 in 100.2 innings of work.

Tampa Bay is 6-2 in their last eight games, 4-7 in their last 11 games as a favorite, and 2-6 in their last eight game two of a series. Oakland is 4-1 in their last five game two of a series, 2-6 in their last eight games overall, and 1-4 in McCarthy’s last five road starts. Oakland is 7-4 in the last 11 meetings of these two.

While Oakland has had their moments this season they are over matched in this series.  Take the Rays minus the 160.
