New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics

The New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics meet for game one of their series in the Bronx.   The Yankees are -205 favorites over the Athletics with an over/under run total set at 9.

It’s been a series of ups and downs for the for the New York Yankees as they have overcome a series of obstacles and injuries but still are in a familiar spot, atop the American League East. The Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 games, 40-24 at home this season, and they have outscored their opponents by a Major League leading 188 runs. As a team New York is hitting .268 led by Robinson Cano at .304, Derek Jeter at .290, and Alex Rodriguez has returned to the lineup and he is hitting .290 on the season as well. As a team the Yankees pitching staff has an ERA of 3.56 with the starters at 3.82 and the bullpen at 2.98. For game one against the A’s New York starts Bartolo Colon who lost last time out after no decisions in his prior two starts. For the season Colon has allowed 123 hits and 49 earned runs while striking out 107 in 124.2 innings of work.

The Oakland Athletics are playing out the final quarter of the season but aside from personal stats and roster spots this team has very little to play for except in the role of spoiler. The Athletics are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 22-40 on the road this season, and they are 15.5 games back in the American League West. As a team Oakland is hitting .244 led by Coco Crisp at .268, Hideki Matsui at .263, and Cliff Pennington at .258. As a team the Athletics pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.53 with the starters at 3.65 and the bullpen at 3.27. For game one in the Bronx Oakland starts Brandon McCarthy who has won five of his last six decisions. For the season McCarthy has allowed 127 hits and 49 earned runs while striking out 77 over 118 innings of work.

New York is 6-0 in their last six games against a right handed starter, 19-7 in their last 26 games against the American League West, and 4-1 in Colon’s last five home starts. Oakland is 21-48 in their last 69 games as a road underdog, 1-6 in their last seven game one of a series, and 6-1 in McCarthy’s last seven starts. Oakland is 2-14 in their last 16 games in New York.
