Florida Marlins vs. St. Louis Cardinals
The Florida Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals meet for game two of their series in South Florida. The Cardinals are -130 favorites over the Marlins with an over/under run total set at 8.
The Florida Marlins had all sorts of chances to get things done against the Cards on Friday but in the end they didn’t and finished with the bases loaded unable to get the run home. Mike Stanton had three hits and Mike Cameron and John Buck each had two but the Marlins were only able to convert their nine hits into two runs. On the mound starter Anibal Sanchez allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out seven over 7.1 innings of work to take his fifth loss of the year. For Saturday’s rematch Florida starts Ricky Nolasco who has won his last two starts. For the season Nolasco has allowed 164 hits and 64 earned runs while striking out 110 in 147 innings of work.
The St. Louis Cardinals might be down but they are far from out of it and they kept pace in the N.L. Central with a win a Friday. Matt Holliday homered and Rafael Furcal, Lance Berkman, and Skip Schumaker all had two hits each as the Cardinals converted their nine hits into three runs. On the mound starter Jake Westbrook allowed six hits and two earned runs over six innings of work to no factor in the decision while Mitchell Boggs got his first win and Lance Lynn got his first save. For Saturday’s game St. Louis starts Chris Carpenter who lost last time out to end a string of five winning decisions. For the season Carpenter has allowed 172 hits and 67 earned runs while striking out 121 in 156.2 innings of work.
Florida is 8-4 in their last 12 games overall, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 8-20 in Nolasco’s last 28 home starts. St. Louis is 4-7 in their last 11 against the N.L. East, 7-13 in their last 20 road games against a right handed starter, and 5-12 in Carpenter’s last 17 road starts. St. Louis is 14-5 in their last 19 games at Florida.
Florida is bad at home while St. Louis isn’t good on the road. That being said, I still lean to taking the Marlins plus the 110.
