Dallas Cowboys vs. Denver Broncos

The Dallas Cowboys and the Denver Broncos begin their 2011 campaigns as they meet for a preseason game in Dallas.  The Cowboys are -4 favorites over the Broncos with an over/under point total set at 37.

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off of a disappointing season and while they have a lot of work to do to get back to where they want to be, they would like to believe that many of the major pieces are in place. All eyes will be on QB Tony Romo who returns from last season’s season ending injury. While Romo won’t play much here, we’ll probably see more of Jon Kitna who we saw plenty of last season and Stephen McGee and possibly Tom Brandstater getting action. With Marion Barber gone from the backfield the competition for increased playing time heats up as Felix Jones tries to play more downs and Tashard Choice will get his chances for the playing time he has vocally craved and we should also get our first glimpses of rookie Demarco Murray and we should see Phillip Tanner get carries as well but the guy to watch is Lonyae Miller who is turning into a versatile option. There is no shortage of receiver is Cowboys camp this year and while Miles Austin and Dez Bryant should be a fantastic tandem, it ends there and we should see some good battles with Lyle Leong, Kevin Ogletree, Manny Johnson, Tysson Poots, Titus Ryan, Teddy Williams, Cleveland James, Dwayne Harris, Jesse Holley, and Dominique Edison all on the preseason roster. Jason Witten is the Tight End and Dallas will look to integrate Martellus Bennett more as he is the future at that position. The Cowboys offensive line struggled last season and while the first unit should be alright, depth is going to be a concern. The bigger concern for the Cowboys is their defense which was roasted in their team Blue and White scrimmage.

The Denver Broncos are making headlines this offseason but more about controversy than anything to look forward to on the field. At QB it appears Kyle Orton will still be the starter followed closely by Tim Tebow and in this game we will probably see Brady Quinn and Adam Weber and if we don’t see one of them, we can only guess they aren’t in the plans. The Broncos backfield is actually kind of interesting this season as Knowshon Moreno is still the starter, Willis McGahee was brought in and Lendale White has shown flashes at Tennessee that he can play at this level and we should see Lance Ball and Jeremiah Johnson who can fly. At receiver Brandon Lloyd had the season a year ago we all knew he was capable of and Eddie Royal is slated to compliment him but the Broncos will really need Demaryius Thomas to step up while Eric Decker could emerge as a possession guy. While Denver upgraded in a big way at head coach, look for the defense to be markedly improved as Elvis Dumervil returns, rookie Von Miller was regarded as one of the best in the draft and Ty Warren, D.J. Williams, Brian Dawkins, and Champ Bailey provide some major veteran leadership.

This is Jason Garrett’s first preseason as Head Coach in Dallas so we don’t have much to go on there, just that the defense was so bad in the scrimmage. John Fox’s Panthers whom he coached prior to coming to the Broncos were 1-7 the prior two preseasons and 3-5 the preseasons before that.

I think we see plenty of scoring here as while Denver’s first unit defense is going to be much better than it was a year ago, the depth is still going to be an issue and Dallas’ is going ot have their hands full this year unless they go out and get some immediate help.  Take the over 37.
