Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees
After a rain shortened game on Tuesday, the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees meet for game three of their series on Chicago’s South Side. The Yankees are -120 favorites over the White Sox with an over/under run total set at 9.
The Chicago White Sox have gone through a rough stretch of games facing the Tigers, the Red Sox and now the Yankees and they haven’t exactly risen to the occasion. On Tuesday Juan Pierre, Adam Dunn, and A.J. Pierzynski each had a hit as that was all of the offense the White Sox managed for their five at bats. On the mound John Danks allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out five over six innings of work to take his ninth loss of the season. For Wednesday’s game Chicago starts Gavin Floyd who has won his last three starts. For the season Floyd has allowed 124 hits and 59 earned runs while striking out 96 in 134 innings of work.
The New York Yankees are in position to be no worse than a game behind the Boston Red Sox when they commence their series this weekend but first they will need to take care of business in their two remaining games against the White Sox. In their abbreviated game on Tuesday mark Teixeira homered twice, Russell Martin homered once, and Derek Jeter had two hits as the Yankees had 11 hits and six runs through six innings. On the mound Phil Hughes had his best stuff as he allowed just three hits over six innings and earned his second win of the year. For Wednesday’s game New York starts A.J. Burnett who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Burnett has allowed 116 hits and 65 earned runs while striking out 120 over 138.1 innings of work.
Chicago is 5-2 in their last seven games against a right handed starter, 1-7 in their last eight games as a home underdog, and 2-5 in Floyd’s last seven home starts. New York is 5-1 in their last six game three of a series, 5-0 in their last five games against a team with a losing record, and 4-11 in Burnett’s last 15 road starts. The Yankees are 12-4 in the last 16 meetings of these two.
Floyd has been hot of late and Burnett has been ice cold and while the Yankees are the better team overall right now, I like the Sox in this match up. Take the White Sox at even money.
