Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals
The Chicago Cubs go for the home sweep of their arch rivals the St. Louis Cardinal. The Cardinals are -130 favorites over the Cubs with an over/under run total set at 8.
The Chicago Cubs are undefeated since firing GM Jim Hendry but unfortunately for them that’s just two games. Aramis Ramirez hit his 24th home run of the season, Starlin Castro had a hit and scored a run, and Marlon Byrd had a hit and an RBI as the Cubs scored three runs on six hits for the afternoon. On the mound starter Matt Garza overcame some first inning jitters as he allowed just five hits and struck out eight over seven innings to get his sixth win of the year while Carlos Marmol pitched the ninth inning to earn his 29th save of the year. For Sunday’s series finale Chicago starts Rodrigo Lopez who has won both of his last two starts. For the season Lopez has allowed 67 hits and 30 earned runs while striking out 29 in 58 innings of work.
The St. Louis Cardinals are falling like a rock in the National League Central and getting shut out on Saturday puts them eight and a half games back in the division. Jon Jay and Skip Schumaker had two hits each and Lance Berkman had a hit as the Cardinals had five hits and were unable to score. On the mound Edwin Jackson pitched well but got no support as eh allowed five hits and three runs while striking out six over seven innings to take his second loss since being traded to the Cardinals. For Sunday’s primetime game St. Louis starts Jake Westbrook who has lost his last three decisions. For the season Westbrook has allowed 157 hits and 76 earned runs while striking out 77 over 142.1 innings of work.
Chicago is 7-1 in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, 9-2 in their last 11 home games, and 4-1 in Lopez’s last five starts. St. Louis is 2-7 in their last nine against the N.L. Central, 4-0 in their last four game three of a series, and 1-6 in Westbrook’s last seven games against the N.L. Central.
We didn’t see a lot of scoring the first two games but that all changes here as the Cardinals take out their frustrations and the Cubs hit Westbrook hard. Take the over 8.
