Carolina Panthers vs. New York Giants
The Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants meet in Carolina as they open their 2011 NFL preseason schedules. The Panthers are -1.5 point favorites over the Giants with an over/under point total set at 33.
It was a nightmare of a season for the Carolina Panthers and the end result was the ousting of John Fox as Head Coach, the same guy that had gotten them to the Super Bowl what seems like just a few years ago. With their troubles the Panthers had the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft which they used on Cam Newton as they struggled mightily at QB with Jimmy Clausen who remains on the roster as the backup along with Derek Anderson and Tony Pike. One area where Carolina needs no help is at Running Back with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart with Mike Goodson and Tyrell Sutton as guys who could start for some other teams. Carolina added Legedu Naanee who is one of the heaviest Wide Receivers in the NFL and with Steve Smith being his opposite in a lot of ways and expect the Panthers to try out a lot of new faces like Kealoha Pilares along with names we know like David Gettis, Brandon LaFell, and David Clowney. The Panthers have two Tight Ends who are weapons in Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey, both new to the team. Carolina resigned Charles Johnson which was huge after losing Julius Peppers the year before and they went defensive line with their second and third picks in the draft taking Terrell McClain and Sione Fua.
The New York Giants tied for first place in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles last season but by virtue of a tie breaker they lost out and didn’t make it to the playoffs at all losing the Wildcard tiebreaker to the Packers. Eli Manning is the face of the Giants organization and in Sage Rosenfels he has a quality backup while David Carr has plenty of experience but most of it was at getting sacked during his days in Houston. It’s the same story in the Giants backfield with Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs and they are backed up by Danny Ware and Andre Brown but look for Charles Scott and the speedy Da’rel Scott to have a say and show the Giants coaches a reason to keep them around. Hakeem Nicks has become a reliable target for Manning and with Steve Smith banged up it will be up to Mario Manningham, Duke Calhoun, and rookie Jerrel Jernigan to step it up while Darius Reynaud has looked good in camp. The Giants trademark over the years has been defense and Mathia Kiwanuka will be playing linebacker this year and they were hoping second round steal Marvin Austin will contribute but he’s been dinged up. Antrel Rolle was a big pick up a year ago but the defense took a hit when first round pick Prince Amukamara injured his foot and is out for the year.
Usually coaches like Tom Coughlin have their own agenda in preseason and for this one there are plenty of players for him to take a look at. The issue with this game for the Panthers is the same issue they had last season, QB. Even if Newton is as good as he ws in college at this level, we are still going to see the rest of the Panthers QB’s and that’s basically the same results we saw from them last season. Take the Giants plus the 1.5.
