Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners and the Boston Red Sox meet for game one of their series at Safeco Field.  The Red Sox are -145 favorites over the Mariners with an over/under run total set at 8.

It’s been a rough season for the Seattle Mariners and this will be a team who will have to do some serious searching in the off season just to figure out what direction they are going as an organization as they haven’t been competitive for quite some time. The Mariners are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 29-29 at home this season, and 16 games below .500. As a team Seattle is hitting a MLBN worst .229 led by Ichiro Suzuki at .268, Brendan Ryan at .263, and Adam Kennedy at .244. As a team the Mariners pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.62 with the starters at 3.54 and the bullpen at 3.83. For game one against the Red Sox Seattle starts Blake Beavan who has won his last two starts. For the season Beavan has allowed 39 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 17 over 41.1 innings of work.

The Boston Red Sox have the best record in the American League and are the leaders in the American League East as we head down the stretch. The Red Sox are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 35-22 on the road, and have outscored their opponents by 144 runs thus far. As a team Boston leads the Majors in team batting average at .281 Led by Adrian Gonzalez at .348, Josh Reddick at .322, and Jacoby Ellsbury at .314, and Dustin Pedroia at .309. As a team the Red Sox have a combined ERA of .391 with the starters at 3.54 and the bullpen at 3.83. For game one against the Mariners Boston starts John Lackey who has won his last five decisions. For the season Lackey has allowed 137 hits and 75 earned runs while striking out 76 in 110 innings of work.

Seattle is 4-1 in their last five home games, 17-35 in their last 52 overall, and 0-4 in their last four games following an off day. Boston is 6-0 in their last six against the A.L. West, 42-18 in their last 60 games overall, and 3-9 in Lackey’s last 12 road starts. Boston is 5-2 in their last seven games in Seattle.

John Lackey has had good results but a lot of it has been the result of the support and most of it has been at home. There is solid value here on the Mariners.
