United States vs. Colombia

This match from Group C sees USA who earned a 2-0 win over North Korea take on Colombia at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim, Germany who lost to Sweden 1-0 in their opening match.

USA had to dig deep and find something extra against North Korea, this was a much more even match the was expected but really boiled down to the Asian side matching the Americans then anything else. USA played a decent first match and had some surprise performances, the most surprising being Lauren Cheney who aside from her goal played a great match overall. The surprising aspect was that Coach Pia Sundhage named her as a tactical replacement in exchange for Megan Rapinoe and it paid huge dividends, now barring another tactical change she should get the start in this match. This team was most impressive in defense, especially Goalkeeper Hope Solo who not only kept a clean sheet but also communicated well with her defense and commanded her area. The player that needs to get more service is Abby Wambach, the wingers will need to get more balls into the box and forward partner Amy Rodriguez will need to play closer and link much better with her as the tournament moves forward.

As for Colombia, other then a nervous first tem minutes they acquitted themselves quite will in their debut Women’s World Cup match and considering that Sweden was expected to run up a sizable score line this isn’t the worst result. As the match wore on Colombia was more confident and composed on the ball and actually dominated possession at certain moments in the match, if they are able to finish a few of their chances it will serve them well in the next two group matches. The teenage sensation Yoreli Rincon played a decent game but will want to have much more of an impact in the next few matches, a couple of players that were very impressive were Carmen Rodallega and Lady Andrade. Both players were strong going forward, provided some creative flair and were the two players that posed Sweden the biggest threat. The one player that need to be stronger is Goalkeeper Sandra Sepulveda, especially when commanding the area and dealing with crosses into the box.

This Colombian side looks entertaining, I enjoy the way they move the ball and they have a few players that are a joy to watch. However this USA side is much stronger and with a match under them will look to ramp it up another level, I like the over in this match even though it’s set at 3 instead of 2.5.
