Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees
The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees meet for game four of their thus far low scoring series at Tropicana Field. The Yankees are -140 favorites over the Rays with an over/under run total set at 7.
The Tampa Bay Rays have lost two of the first three games in this series as they are losing ground in the A.L. East as well as in the Wild Card race. On Wednesday Casey Kotchman had three hits, Johnny Damon had two hits, but Matt Joyce struck out four times as the Rays had eight hits with no runners crossing the plate. Starter David Price allowed six hits and two runs while striking out five over 7.1 innings of work to take his eighth loss of the season. For Thursday’s series finale Tampa Bay starts James Shields who has lost his last four starts after a blistering first half of the season which earned him a spot on the All Star team. For the season Shields has allowed 112 hits and 43 earned runs while striking out 145 in 148.2 innings of work.
The New York Yankees keep finding ways to get it done and when all is said and done it isn’t a matter of how you get it done, it’s a matter of getting it done. On Wednesday Curtis Granderson hit a two run home run in the first inning, Nick Swisher had two hits, and Eduardo Nunez had a hit and drove in two runs as the Yankees scored four runs off of seven hits. Freddy Garcia was as good as he can be on the mound as he allowed eight hits and struck out seven over 6.2 scoreless innings to get his eighth win of the year. For Thursday’s game New York starts the ace of their staff and leading Cy Young Award candidate C.C. Sabathia who has won his last seven starts. For the season Sabathia has allowed 137 hits and 45 earned runs while striking out 134 in 153.2 innings of work.
Tampa Bay is 2-6 in their last eight games overall, 6-2 in their last eight games against a left handed starter, and 1-5 in Shields’ last six starts against a team with a winning record. New York is 24-11 in their last 35 games overall, 2-5 in their last seven game four of a series, and 35-16 in Sabathia’s last 51 road starts. The Rays are 4-13 in Shields’ last 17 starts against the Yankees and the Yankees are 1-4 in Sabathia’s last five road starts against the Rays.
I like the Yankees in this spot. Sabathia at minus 140 is to tempting to resist.
