St. Louis Cardinals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks meet for game two of their series at Busch Stadium.  The Cardinals are -135 favorites over the Diamondbacks with an over/under run total set at 8.

The St. Louis Cardinals are back into a tie in the National League Central after their loss to Arizona and Milwaukee’s win over Cincinnati. On Thursday Ryan Theirot had a hit, David Freese had a hit and scored a run, and Matt Holliday had a hit and an RBI but the three hits and a run were all of the offense the Cardinals’ bats could muster for the night. Starter Kyle McClellan allowed six hits and four runs over seven innings of work which led to his sixth loss of the season. For Friday’s game the Cardinals look to bounce back with Kyle Lohse who has lost three of his last four decisions. For the season Lohse has allowed 100 hits and 38 earned runs while striking out 60 over 115.1 innings of work.

The Arizona Diamondbacks look to be digging in to fight until the end to make the post season and they showed it once again on Thursday by knocking of a post season contender on the road. Jay Upton had a home run and two RBI’s, Ryan Roberts had a hit, scored a run, and drove in a run, and Sean Burroughs had a hit and an RBI as six Diamondback hits led to four runs. Joe Saunders was superlative on the mound allowing just a hit in five innings to earn his sixth win of the year and David Hernandez picked up his sixth save of the year. For Friday’s game Arizona starts Ian Kennedy who lost last time out and was roughed up for seven runs in the process. For the season Kennedy has allowed 107 hits and 46 earned runs while striking out 103 in 122.1 innings of work.

St. Louis is 2-5 in their last seven home games, 1-4 in their last five against the NL West, and 1-4 in Lohse’s last five starts. Arizona is 4-1 in their last five game two of a series, 18-8 in their last 26 road games, and 4-1 in Kennedy’s last five road starts. Arizona is 3-7 in their last 10 games in St. Louis.

The Cardinals can’t seem to get rolling full steam and just when it looks like they are, they seem to hit a wall. It looks like they hit another wall here.  I’m taking the Diamondbacks plus the 115 here.
