New York Yankees vs. New York Mets

Barring a meeting in the World Series, the New York Mets and the New York Yankees meet in game one of their final Subway Series of 2011.  The Yankees are -130 favorites over the Mets with an over/under run total set at 9.

The New York Mets have been a tough team to figure out this season as they are above .500 but seem to still lack any kind of consistency. The Mets are 6-4 in their last 10 games, 18-20 at home this season, and in third place in the NL East, nine and a half games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. As a team New York is hitting .264 led by Jose Reyes at .352, Ronny Paulino at .346, Daniel Murphy at .302, and Carlos Beltran at .281. As a team the Mets pitching staff has an ERA at 4.05 with the starters at 3.86 and bullpen at 4.45. For game one the New York Mets start lefty Jon Niese who has won three of his last four starts. For the season Niese has allowed 100 hits and 40 earned runs while striking out 79 in 98 innings of work.

The New York Yankees are in a familiar spot, first place in the American League East as they are two and a half games ahead of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees have won five games in a row, are 8-2 in their last 10 games, and 20-13 on the road this season. As a team New York is hitting .259 led by Alex Rodriguez at .299, Robinson Cano at .289, Curtis Granderson at .276, and Brett Gardener at .274. As a team the Yankees pitching staff has an ERA of 3.51 with the starters at 3.75 and the bullpen at 2.97. For game one at Citi Field the Yankees start Ivan Nova who has won his last three decisions. For the season Nova has allowed 91 hits and 41 earned runs while striking out 48 over 86.2 innings of work.

The Mets are 4-1 in their last five interleague games, 12-4 in their last 16 games against a right handed starter, and 7-3 in Niese’s last 10 starts. The Yankees are 6-0 in their last six interleague games, 4-1 in their last five against the NL East, and 5-0 in Nova’s last five road starts against a team with a winning record. The Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 games at the Mets.

The Yankees are hot but the Mets just aren’t a pushover right now and I think they have an edge here as a home dog.  I’m taking the Mats plus the 110 here
