Kansas City Royals vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Kansas City Royals and the Tampa bay Rays meet for game two of their series at Kaufman Stadium. The Rays are -120 favorites over the Royals with an over/under run total set at 9.
It may be too late for the Kansas City Royals but it looks like someone may have forgotten to tell them as they have won three games in a row after beating the Rays on Friday Night. On Friday Brett Butler homered, scored twice, and drove in two runs, Melky Cabrera and Jeff Francoeur each had three hits, and Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer had two hits as the Royals scored 10 runs off of 16 hits. Starter Luke Hochevar allowed six hits and four earned runs over 5.1 innings to earn his sixth win of the season as the Royals bullpen allowed just three hits the rest of the way. For Saturday’s game Kansas City starts Jeff Francis who has lost his last five decisions. For the season Francis has allowed 141 hits and 63 earned runs while striking out 58 in 122.2 innings of work.
The Tampa Bay Rays are starting to fade in the American League East and the A.L. Wild Card race but they aren’t completely out of it yet. On Friday Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce homered and Johnny Damon had three hits as the Rays had nine hits and four runs in the losing effort. Starter Wade Davis allowed 11 hits and six runs, five of them earned, over 5.1 innings of work to take his seventh loss of the season. For Saturday’s game Tampa Bay starts Jeff Niemann who has won his last three decisions. For the season Niemann has allowed 64 hits and 27 earned runs while striking out 43 in 61.2 innings of work.
Kansas City is 21-41 in their last 62 games overall, 5-12 in their last 17 game two of a series, 0-6 in Francis last six starts. Tampa Bay is 7-2 in their last nine games against a left handed starter, 36-17 in their last 53 against a team with a losing record, and 8-2 in Niemann’s last 10 road starts against a team with a losing record. Tampa Bay is 13-6 in the last 19 meetings of these two.
These are two teams who can bang it around but this match up doesn’t look like it plays out that way and it should stay under the total. I’m taking under the 9 runs here.
