Houston Astros vs. Florida Marlins

The Florida Marlins and the Houston Astros meet in South Florida for game two of their final series before the All Star Break.  The Marlins are -135 favorites over the Astros with an over/under run total set at 9.

What started as a promising season for the Florida Marlins has turned into a nightmare as they are 15 games back in the National League East. On Thursday Florida took it out on Houston as Mike Stanton hit a two run homer, Emilio Bonifacio had three hits, and Luke Morrison had two hits and drove in two runs as part of an eight hit and five run night for the Marlin’s offense. Brad hand had his best night on the mound as he allowed just two hits and struck out four over seven shutout innings to earn his first win. For Friday’s game Florida looks to get it done again as they send Javier Vazquez to the mound for the start. Vazquez has been sharp in his last three starts with a 0.98 ERA of that span and for the season he has allowed 105 hits and 56 earned runs while striking out 62 over 89.1 innings of work.

The Houston Astros have the worst record in baseball and losing again on Thursday just added to that number. Angel Sanchez, Carlos Lee, and Clint Barmes all had hits but those three hits were all of the offense Houston had in the shutout loss. Starter J.A. Happ allowed five hits and five earned runs while striking out eight and walking seven over 5.2 innings of work to take his 11th loss of the year. For Friday’s rematch Houston starts Jordan Lyles who has yet to win this season. For the year Lyles has allowed 42 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 32 in 41 innings of work.

Florida is 9-26 in their last 35 games overall, 1-7 in their last eight against the NL Central, and 2-6 in Vazquez’s last eight starts. Houston is 2-6 in their last eight road games, 5-17 in their last 22 against the NL East, and 0-6 in Lyles’ last six starts. Houston is 2-6 in the last eight meetings of these two.

While we never know what to expect from these teams and Vazquez has been a tough nut to crack of late, we’ll see plenty of scoring here and this one should go over the total as 13 of the last 17 meetings of these two have.  Take the over 9 here.
