Chicago Cubs vs. Philadelphia Phillies
The Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies meet for the rubber match of their three game series at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are -120 favorites over the Phillies with an over/under run total set at 8.
After winning game one of their series against the Phillies, the Chicago Cubs took a two run lead into the eighth inning on Tuesday but were unable to hold on. Stalin Castro had two hits including a first inning two run home run, Reed Johnson had three hits and scored a run, and Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Pena had two hits each as the Cubs scored two runs off of 10 hits on the night. Matt Garza was outstanding on the mound dazzling Philadelphia batters as he allowed four hits and a run while striking out five over seven innings of work to not factor in the decision while Sean Marshall allowed five hits and three runs while striking out three over two innings to take his third blown save and fourth loss of the year. For Wednesday’s series deciding game Chicago starts Ryan Dempster who went eight scoreless innings in his last start. For the season Dempster has allowed 124 hits and 62 earned runs while striking out 111 in 119.1 innings of work.
The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t lost two games in a row since early June and they once again managed to avoid it as they rallied for the win at Wrigley. Michael Martinez hit a two run double in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead for the Phillies, one of his two hits and Jimmy Rollins and Dominic Brown had two hits each as the Phillies had nine hits and four runs for the night. Starter Cliff Lee allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out six over six innings of work to not factor in the decision as Michael Stutes got the win after working two innings and Antonio Bastardo struck out the side in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the year. For game three of the series Philadelphia starts Vance Worley who has won his last three starts allowing one run in each of two of the games and allowing zero runs in the other. For the season Worley has allowed 44 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out 41 in 54.1 innings of work.
Chicago is 3-10 in their last 13 games against the NL East, 15-36 in their last 51 game three of a series, and 6-1 in Dempster’s last seven home starts. Philadelphia is 9-3 in their last 12 road games against a right handed starter, 23-10 in their last 33 games overall, and 5-0 in Worley’s last five starts. Philadelphia is 2-4 in their last six games in Chicago.
It is supposed to be extra warm in Chicago in this one but don’t look for hot bats against these pitchers and look for the total to stay under. Take the under 8 runs here.
