New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers
The New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers meet in the Bronx for a rematch of last season’s post season. The Yankees are -145 favorites over the Rangers with an over/under run total set at 8.5
The New York Yankees aren’t accustomed to being in second place but that’s where they stand right now heading into a home series against West leading Texas. The Yankees are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 20-17 at home this season, and two and a half games behind Boston in the American League East. As a team New York is hitting .257 led by Robinson Cano at .285, Alex Rodriguez at .284, and Curtis Granderson at .278. As a team the Yankees pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.63 with the starters at 3.90 and the bullpen at 3.06. For game one against the AL West leaders New York starts C.C. Sabathia who ended his four game winning streak in his last outing taking a loss. For the season Sabathia has allowed 96 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 75 in 100 innings of work.
The Texas Rangers are in first place in the American League West but their lead has been shrinking of late as they come in as losers of their last two games. Texas is 5-5 in their last 10 games, 16-18 on the road this season, and are a game and a half ahead of the Seattle Mariners. As a team Texas is hitting .263 led by Michael Young at .306, Mitch Moreland at .305, and Josh Hamilton at .289. The Rangers pitching staff has an ERA of 3.74 with the starters at 3.58 and the bullpen at 4.15. For game one in the Bronx Texas starts Alexi Ogando who still hasn’t lost in seven decisions this season. For the season Ogando has allowed 55 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 60 in 81.1 innings of work.
New York is 6-1 in their last seven against the American League West, 9-5 in their last 14 overall, and 14-3 Sabathia’s last 17 starts against a team with a winning record. Texas is 5-1 in their last six games against a left handed starter, 6-2 in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, and 6-0 in Ogando’s last eight starts. Texas is 1-4 in the last five meetings of these two.
I don’t love this game from a betting standpoint but getting odds on a guy who hasn’t lost is a value at this point in the season. I’m taking the Rangers plus the 125 here.
Texas Rangers +125 New York Yankees
